Artist Statment
In my artistic exploration, I delve into the realms of portraiture, childhood, and the multifaceted experiences of being a person of color. Through my work, I seek to shed light on the nuances of identity, memory, and the socio-cultural landscape that shapes our existence.
Portraiture, as a genre, allows me to capture the essence of individuals and their unique narratives. By delving beyond the physical surface, I aim to reveal the inner complexities and depths of the human spirit. Through intricate brushstrokes or meticulous use of various mediums, I aim to portray not just the external features but also the internal emotional landscapes that make each person distinctive.
Childhood, with its innocence and wonder, occupies a significant space in my artistic exploration. As a person of color, I reflect upon my own experiences and draw from the collective memories of marginalized communities. I aim to create visual narratives that celebrate the resilience, joy, and imagination that often flourish within these communities despite the challenges they face. Through vibrant colors, whimsical compositions, and nostalgic imagery, I invite viewers to connect with their own memories of childhood, bridging the gaps between diverse cultural backgrounds.
Being a person of color adds an additional layer of complexity to my artistic vision. In a world that still grapples with systemic inequities and prejudices, I strive to challenge existing narratives and confront social constructs that have historically marginalized individuals like myself. By depicting people of color in positions of power, beauty, and strength, I aim to disrupt preconceived notions and redefine the boundaries of representation.
In my artistic practice, I employ a diverse range of mediums, including painting, drawing, mixed media, and digital art. Each medium allows me to experiment with techniques and materials that best convey the desired emotions and stories. By constantly pushing the boundaries of my artistic expression, I aspire to create works that provoke contemplation, evoke empathy, and foster dialogue around themes of identity, race, and childhood.
Ultimately, my art serves as a vehicle for amplifying marginalized voices, celebrating the beauty of diversity, and fostering understanding. It is my hope that through my portraiture, viewers are encouraged to question societal norms, challenge biases, and embrace the richness of human experiences, irrespective of race, culture, or background. Together, let us embark on a journey of introspection, empathy, and transformation, as we navigate the complex tapestry of portraiture, childhood, and being a person of color.
About Me.
Alexis Fudge is an emerging artist currently living and working in New York City. Her artwork draws heavily on her own experiences from childhood. As a black girl who was drawn to musicals, anime, and all sorts of adventures from her travels. Alexis rarely saw herself reflected in the works of her heroes. Her works are an investigation into the relationship between blackness and media. Particularly honing in on the correlation between self, identity, and representation. She’s always been interested in how minorities often have to learn to bifurcate their identity in order to fit in and survive. Drawing on her love of theater and whimsy, Alexis often uses elaborate fabrics, lighting, and familiar nostalgic images to create a storybook feel to her work. This contrast between the topical whimsy and the underlying darkness is at the core of her work. It is a commentary on society, which often sets up people in opposition to one another causing us to only see what we are not rather than what we have the potential to be. Alexis is currently a Art educator in the New York City Department of Education.
